US Open: One last Alcaraz – Sinner matchup at this season’s Grand Slam?

The 2025 tennis season has been marked by a duel at the top. With Djokovic’s slow decline and Zverev’s inability to turn the corner, two names have dominated the top of the ATP rankings this year: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Spanish domination

In 2025, Alcaraz started the season with the upper hand on Sinner after winning their last three matches. He then continued his winning streak by beating Sinner in the Rome Masters final before they battled it out again during the outstanding final of the French Open. We all know what happened there: the Spaniard’s thrilling comeback brought his record to five consecutive victories over his Italian rival.

The two players have faced off 14 times in their careers, and Alcaraz has been dominant, with 9 wins over Sinner.

The Italian fights back

It was the same scene at Wimbledon, with the two current heavyweights of tennis meeting once again in the final. This time, though, Sinner outclassed Alcaraz and beat him in 4 sets to earn his first victory against the Spaniard since October 3, 2023. He also put an end to a string of victories on the ATP tour that had seen Alcaraz go undefeated since April 2025.

The two were set to face off yet again in the final of the Cincinnati Masters, but unfortunately, the ailing Italian was forced to retire in the first set due to illness – meaning Alcaraz will be heading to the US with the latest victory in their ongoing rivalry. Despite his withdrawal in Cincinnati, Jannik Sinner has promised he’ll be back for the US Open. Reassuring news for tennis fans!

A final confrontation?

Given the level at which the two men have been playing, we’ll most likely be seeing them again for one last confrontation in the final tournament of the Grand Slam... as long the draw cooperates. In any case, it’s a safe bet that these two will be facing off at some point. So if you want to bet on the event, you’d best keep an eye on Sinner and Alcaraz.
