Australian Open: The favorites
It’s already time for the first Grand Slam of this new tennis season. The best tennis players are ready to fight it out. Will we be surprised or will the favorites reassure their fans?
On the men's side
In the men’s draw, there is currently an uncontested hard court master. Jannik Sinner, winner of the tournament last season as well as the US Open, has an impressive record of 41 victories and only 3 defeats on this type of surface. The world number 1 is the overwhelming favorite and will be the clear leader of the tournament.
While the Italian is logically the one everyone has their hopes on, other players may well disrupt the tournament. World number 2 Alexander Zverev is still looking for his first Grand Slam victory and is hoping to ride the wave of his excellent 2024 season. However, he finished last season on a slightly more negative note and recently withdrew from a tournament due to injury. Will he be 100%?
At just 21 years old, he has already won in 3 Grand Slams. The only one he's missing is Australia, where he's always had a harder time winning. Carlos Alcaraz will be one to keep a close eye on. Even if he hasn’t done well lately on hard courts, at the US Open he shocked the world by getting his first big victory.
Finally, how can we forget Novak Djokovic? For the first time since 2017, he couldn’t win a Grand Slam last season. Despite a tumultuous season, he still won Olympic gold with a sensational performance.
On the women's side
Here, we clearly have a top three. Iga Swiatek, the world number 1 who has never won in Melbourne, is the big favorite. The Polish woman is back after an absence of two months, sanctioned by the bodies for suspicious activities that could give her an unfair advantage.
Right behind her, title holder Aryna Sabalenka hopes to do it again. Finally, Coco Gauff got her first Grand Slam hard court victory at the US Open last season. So, of course she will be looking to pull it off again, in fact, she secured a great victory against Swiatek just a few days ago.
