Australian Open: the final four

Here we are. After a fierce competition, it’s time for the semifinals. Four men and four women are still in the running to win the trophy for the first Grand Slam of the season. But who has the most chances of winning?

The Djokovic comeback?

For the men, three of the four favorites are in this quarterfinal. Only Carlos Alcaraz could not qualify and was defeated in the quarterfinals. The man who beat the Spaniard was in fact the legend Novak Djokovic. Of course all eyes were on him and he responded by eliminating Alcaraz on Tuesday. After letting the first set slip away, the Serb played with his steely mind that has brought him more than one title to win the next three sets 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4 to secure his place in the semifinals.

He will take on world number 2 Alexander Zverev, who has never wavered until now, apart from his close quarterfinal clash, which he finished with an authoritative 6-1 in the fourth set. One thing is for sure, the clash between the German and the Serb will be epic. But watch out for fatigue, because in the final, a monster might stand in the way of the winner...

Sinner heading straight for the win?

This monster is Jannik Sinner. The world number 1 has kept up the momentum of his great 2024 by sending all his opponents home in style. It’s simple, his quarterfinal against de Minaur was nice and quick and he won in three sets (6-3, 6-2, 6-1).

In the semifinals, the Italian will face Ben Shelton, a real surprise of the tournament. The American, ranked 21st in the world, has fought real wars on the court, leading to ultra-tight clashes where he has always come out on top. However, he hasn’t faced a top 10 player in the tournament yet and it’s safe to say that with Sinner, you have to hang on.

The women's final is already set

No big surprise here as world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka did the job and easily qualified for the final. On the other hand, Iga Swiatek lost her semifinal against Madison Keys. The American, who led in the first set, completely turned the game around by inflicting a painful 6-1 loss on the Pole before finishing the match 10-8 in the super tie break.

The world no. 19 has just shocked the world and could make it one for the books by winning tomorrow’s head-to-head against Sabalenka. Prepare your popcorn for a historic finale!
