One bracket, two very different sides
It’s time for the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup. We may have thought that the European teams were going have a smooth run during the round of 16, but there were surprises. In the end, one side of the final stage bracket only has one team from Europe, while the heavyweights all meet on the other side.
Left side
On this side of the bracket, the rest of the world is in charge! The big European teams have been eliminated and Brazil is the most represented nation.
It all kicked off with a 100% Brazilian duel between Palmeiras and Botafogo. Despite a red card at the end of the match, Palmeiras managed to win 1-0 after a very close encounter.
The other match was between Chelsea and Benfica and the Blues weren't subtle as they corrected the Portuguese 1-4. In the quarterfinals, Chelsea will face Palmeiras for a place in the semifinals. Surprisingly, the Londoners are the last European team in this part of the bracket.
Fluminense faced Inter and it was... Fluminense who won with a score of... 0-2! An exceptional performance that sent the Brazilians into the quarters.
A few hours later, Al Hilal faced Manchester City, the only team to score 9 out of 9 in the group stage. After a fierce struggle and 120 minutes of entertainment, it was Al Hilal who won 3-4.
Al Hilal will therefore face Fluminense in a duel that will 100% guarantee the presence of a non-European team in the semifinals.
Right side
Two clashes are coming up on this side where the titans battle. First, PSG crushed Inter Miami and Bayern got rid of Flamengo quite easily.
That means we have a duel at the top between the European champions and the German champions. A duel between two tacticians who are experts of the beautiful game: Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique.
The winner won't be out of the woods yet though, as they will have to face another strong team in the semifinals, because the last quarterfinal is not one to be ignored.
Since their victory over Pachuca, Real Madrid have gained momentum. The Merengues faced Juventus on Tuesday and after a controlled encounter and fantastic tactical adjustment by Xabi Alonso at half-time, Gonzalo Garcia gave Real victory by scoring the only goal of the match.
On the other hand, Dortmund won against Monterrey. So, it will be Real Madrid against Dortmund for the last ticket for the semis.
