Pro League: A tense Walloon derby
Walloon derbies are always special matches given the strong rivalry between the two sides. This Friday, Sclessin could witness another very tense duel.
Opposing dynamics
While the two teams are separated by just one point in the standings, last weekend completely reversed their dynamics.
After weeks of consecutive defeats, Charleroi’s Zebras showed they were the better Sporting by winning 1-0 against Anderlecht. This victory allowed them to move back ahead of Standard and perhaps set them on course for better days. Will they be able to win at Sclessin? It’s a risky bet.
Meanwhile, after Standard had just secured an important win against Antwerp, the Liège side were facing a trip that has always been a historically difficult one. Up against their former coach, Ivan Leko, the Rouches stuck to the script and were once again crushed in Ghent. A heavy 4-0 defeat that plunged the supporters right back into some of Standard’s darkest hours.
An intense rivalry in a tense climate
Historically, clashes between Charleroi and Standard have always carried a high risk of trouble. Abandoned matches, clashes between supporters — and even between players — it only takes a spark to ignite a Walloon derby.
In the current climate, a spark may not even be needed. Indeed, Standard have been complaining about refereeing for weeks now. Following the incidents against Antwerp, which reflected a sense of total frustration, the announcement of Abid’s suspension for the Ghent game, the proceedings against Marc Wilmots, and the prospect of a match behind closed doors certainly didn’t sit well with the Standard supporters.
Tension is at its peak, so another red card in this match would hardly come as a surprise. That’s why we’re giving you boosted odds!
