Pro League: the 25th matchday is on the horizon
This weekend, the Pro League is easing off slightly. However, these matches could prove tricky for the big names.
Standard and Anderlecht
Things are continuing to get worse for two of Belgium’s most popular teams. Both were beaten this weekend, making them the two worst teams in the league over the last five matchdays.
Having only taken one point against Dender and scoring no goals in the last 3 matches, Anderlecht are in crisis mode more than ever before, dangerously close to falling outside the top 6. Edward Still, interim coach, is the latest to jump ship to Watford following the release of coach Besnik Hasi and sporting director Olivier Renard. The club is in a state of complete instability with an atmosphere of permanent tension. Will you dare to bet on a win against RAAL this Sunday?
For Standard, the euphoria after winning the Belgian clásico has quickly faded. With Les Rouches having to travel to Bruges without most of their midfielders, including Ilaimaharitra and Teuma, who were injured in training during the week, they knew it was going to be difficult. And sure enough, it was. At half time, the scoreboard already stood at 3-0 for Brugge and Standard knew they would return to Liège empty-handed.
This weekend, Standard are back at their home stadium of Sclessin, welcoming Union Saint-Gilloise. It’s another match that looks set to be tricky, unless the magic of Liège thwarts Union’s plans.
Easy matches for Club Brugge and Sint-Truiden?
On paper, the two teams behind Union should be able to bag 3 easy points this weekend. But isn’t it often this type of match where the unlikely happens?
In Bruges, it’s derby weekend! The Jan Breydel stadium will be decked out in Cercle Brugge’s colors to receive the visitors, Club Brugge. Though Club Brugge are the obvious favorites, derbies are always special – so, will we see a shock?
Sint-Truiden are definitely the biggest surprise this season. They crushed Westerlo last weekend and remain in second place in the standings, just four points behind Union! This Sunday, STVV will welcome Zulte Waregem at home. No one envisages Sint-Truiden losing in their fortress, but imagine... It is the Pro League after all! Nothing is impossible.
