Pro League: the race to the Playoffs is coming to an end

For 29 matchdays, the 16 Pro League teams battled it out to get their place in the Champions Playoffs and escape the Relegation Playoffs. As we arrive at this last matchday, the fate of some teams still hasn’t been decided. Who will be the big winners at the end of the regular season?

The race to the Champions Playoffs

While Union, Sint-Truiden, Club Brugge and KV Mechelen are already sure of their spot in the top six, there are still three teams in the running for the last two places.

First of all, Sporting Anderlecht have a good chance of playing in the Champions Playoffs. The Mauves only need a single point against Cercle to qualify. The only catastrophic scenario for the Brussels team would be a defeat and a victory from Genk and KAA Gent.

Then, KAA Gent need to win against Dender to secure their qualification. One false step and they’ll have to hope that Genk don’t win, otherwise the Buffalos will be heading for the Europe Playoffs.

Finally, Genk are ready for ambush. Currently in 7th, the Limburg club must win against La Louvière. Then, they’ll be hoping for the Mauves to lose or Gent not to win.

The threat of relegation

Even if this year there’s less chance of being relegated as next season it will be 18 teams that take to the pitch instead of 16 like this season, all the teams want to avoid the Relegation Playoffs at all costs. For Dender and Cercle Brugge, it’s already all over. But three teams are still at risk of falling into the bottom four.

OH Leuven is currently safe. However, they absolutely need to win to ensure they stay that way. Their opponent tonight will be Antwerp at home, who have nothing left to play for. If they mess up, they will have to hope that their two closest rivals don’t win.

As for RAAL, they’re just one point away from OHL. If Leuven don’t win, RAAL will need to win at home against Genk, who will also be giving it their all to win. Will the wolves pull off the upset?

Finally, Zulte Waregem still have a slim chance of being saved. If they manage to beat Charleroi and Leuven and RAAL lose, they will escape the Relegation Playoffs.
