Introduction to athletics

Athletics is the sport with the most individual events, that is 48, and the most participants, with 905 male and 905 female athletes.

Almost all the events will take place at the Stade de France, except various walking races.

In order to qualify for this edition of athletics at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, athletes must achieve the best time in order to reach the standards set by World Athletics.

The qualification criteria are the following:1,810 athletes, half are women and half are men;
A maximum of three athletes per National Olympic Committee for individual events, one for relay events and two teams for mixed relays;
Sending an athlete or a team with the highest ranking, if a country is not represented for the 100 meters, 800 meters or marathon events;
50% of places are assigned via Olympic standards or quotas, and the other half via World Athletics rankings.

This year, World Athletics has decided to pay the holders of an Olympic title $50,000 for each of the 48 gold medal winner.

Olympic Athletics Games venue

For this new edition of athletics at the 2024 Olympics and for the very first time, the Stade de France athletics track is purple instead of the eternal terracotta color known to all. This change now enables athletes to be put in the foreground and provides greater contrast when capturing for television.

This new athletics track is made up of 50% recycled or renewable materials, such as:

Natural and synthetic rubber;
Mineral components;
Pigments;
Additives.

Para athletics at the Olympic Games

Para athletics, also known as parasport athletics, appeared at the Rome Olympics in 1960 and was one of the first sports in this program for athletes with a disability. However, not all events are accessible to every disability.

The number of para-athletes increases at each edition of the Olympics. Para-athletics events are open to a wide range of disabilities and welcome athletes with physical, mental and visual disabilities. These types of disability include:

Paraplegia, tetraplegia and other similar disabilities;
Amputation and other similar disabilities;
Visual disability, blindness;
Cerebral palsy;
Intellectual disability;
People of small stature.

The classification process is the following:

Letter

T = Track (=track for runners)
F = Field (=field for throwers)

Number

1st element (dozens)

from 11 to 13 = visual impairment
20 = intellectual impairment
from 31 to 38 = brain injury (standing or sitting)
from 40 to 47 = short stature (40-41) and amputees (42-47)
from 51 to 57 = wheelchair (running or throwing)
from 61 to 64 = lower limb prosthesis

2nd element (units) from 1 to 8

1 = highest degree of disability
8 = lowest degree of disability

The Paralympic Athletics Games events are similar to those of the traditional Olympic Games. However, some of them are not part of the program, such as the pole vault, hammer throw, walking race events and obstacle races.

It is possible to find several events for each discipline as they are grouped according to the type of disability. Numerous finals are played for this reason.
