Some tips to place your bets
It's important to do some research on the various participants, especially in sprint events, so that you can place your bets in an informed way. So it's worth asking yourself a few questions:
- Are their careers on the up or on the down? This can be a very good indicator for your future bets. The results of the various swimmers can help you decide who to bet on.
- How experienced are the swimmers? Are they just starting out or do they already have a sporting career to their credit?
- What were their times over the past year, especially in swimming competitions? What's their best time? Depending on the discipline, there is an official time called “Olympic Qualifying Time” (OQT). Was the selected swimmer able to respect this time, or were they selected by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) to send a representative for the country? Times are very important in a competition, as they can show which athletes have the best chance of finishing on the podium and breaking world records.
- How was their physical training for these swimming competitions? Were training sessions respected and did they run smoothly? Athletes have to respect a sporting discipline, whether by training or by following a specific diet to reach the standards required for the Olympics.
- What's their preferred stroke? Performances are different from one type of stroke to another during swimming competitions. This is a good indicator for your future bets, so you can bet cleverly on certain athletes rather than others, but also according to their swimming practice.
- What's their physical condition? Have they suffered injury or illness? An injury can have disastrous consequences on a sporting career, and on your sports betting! Weak physical fitness can prevent athletes from reaching a certain level of excellence. Pay attention to this kind of information.
- What’s their psychological state? An athlete without enough motivation can quickly find themselves behind their competitors. It's important to pay attention to the slightest sign of weakness.
In addition to this information, you can also follow these tips:
- Compare all the information you obtain on the swimmers and create a table of results to get an overview of the most skillful. This table is important to efficiently place your different bets.
- Avoid betting on a whim or on your favorite sportsmen and women every time, as some athletes may stand out from the crowd and perhaps your favorites won't always finish on the podium. Their skills must come first. Betting on a whim or on an impulse can cause harm and cost you money.
- Have you lost one of your bets? Don't let your emotions play tricks on you and avoid trying to win your money back at all costs. Why? Because you could lose again! This is also the way to fall into the vicious circle of gambling. Bettors don't win every time, some bets lose. So don't let your emotions get the upper hand at the first disappointment.
- Never believe a so-called “professional” who certifies their predictions as 100% winners! There's many enticing headlines and it's easy to get caught up in the lure of money. Take the time to get to know the forecasters on the market, check out their results over a long period of time and what disciplines they excel in.
- Odds can be a good indicator and can increase your chances of winning. The bigger the odds, the harder it is to win, but the bigger the payout. You have loads of choice. It's up to you to decide how to place your bets. However, odds are not 100% reliable.
How will the swimming events take place at the 2024 Olympics?
The National Olympic Committee (NOC) may register a maximum of 2 swimmers in each individual event, only if they qualify in the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT). Otherwise, if no swimmer can reach the OQT, the National Olympic Committee can still suggest an athlete. World Aquatics (FINA in French) suggest the OQT.
Swimmers qualify according to their times achieved in other competitions, between each edition of the Olympic Games.
The various events take place from 27 July 2024 to 4 August 2024. Each event takes place in a 50-meter pool heated to 25°C, at the Paris - La Défense Arena site.

Which athlete has won the most medals in swimming?
Unsurprisingly, it's the very famous Michael Phelps, who has won 28 medals, including 23 gold medals between 2004 and 2016! The American not only holds the medal record, but also numerous world exploits: the world record in the 200 m freestyle (1 min 42 sec 96), 200 m medley (1 min 54 sec 23), 400m medley (4 min 03 sec 84), 4 x 100 m freestyle (3 min 08 sec 24), 4 x 200 m freestyle (6 min 58 sec 56), and many more.
He is also the only swimmer to have kept his Olympic title in every Olympics in which he has competed, and he has also won 26 medals at the World Swimming Championships, making him the most successful swimmer in the history of swimming. An extraordinary world champion! His exploits don't stop there, and his name is forever etched in people's memories.
The Americans largely dominate the top 10 medal records, and it will be very difficult to beat Michael Phelps!
Some names of champion swimmers
Another well-known champion of the pools is the French swimmer Laure Manaudou. She was an Olympic champion in 2004, she also won a silver and a bronze medal at the same Olympics! Francis Luyce, the former President of the French Swimming Federation, has said in the past that Laure Manaudou had the potential to become an Olympic champion. He wasn't wrong!
As a three-time world champion in long course, she has also won gold medals 9 times at European championships, in both long and short course. She has won no fewer than 62 gold medals at French championships, and her record remains one of the most impressive. She masters breaststroke, butterfly, crawl and backstroke.
In Belgium, we have some medal-winning athletes: Frederik Deburghgraeve (Olympic champion in the 100 m breaststroke in 1996), Joseph De Combe (silver medal for the 200 m breaststroke in 1924), Gérard Blitz (bronze medal for the 100 m backstroke in 1920) and Pieter Timmers (silver medal for the 100 m freestyle in 2016).
Are there any other swimming events?
Of course! In addition to the various events listed in our calendar, there are many other disciplines, such as:
- Artistic swimming, also known as synchronized swimming, is an aquatic ballet performed solo, in duets or with 8 swimmers. Russia won the most gold medals (10), but Japan won the most medals (4 silver and 10 bronze);
- Diving and its various solo or duo events;
- Water polo has been part of the Olympic Games since 1900, but has only been represented by women's teams since the Sydney Olympics in 2000! Belgium won 6 medals between 1900 and 1936 (4 silver medals and 2 bronze medals);
- Triathlon has been on the program since the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, and Great Britain has the most medals (8) and the most gold medals (3);
- At the Paralympic Games, swimming events are also numerous and represented in many disability categories. The longest distance is 400 meters;
- During the World Cup open water swimming event, the Seine was threatened with pollution due to heavy rain and sewage overflowing into the river. The rate of Escherichia coli bacteria was far too high. The open-water event often gets itself talked about for its many polluted rivers.
Doping in swimming
Cases of doping in sport are nothing new, and with the number of cases on the rise, the IOC decided to create a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 1999, stepping up the pressure since the 2000 Summer Olympics. Doping is much more common in athletics and strength competitions.
Here are some of the swimmers who tested positive:
- Rick DeMont (USA) in 1972;
- Many Russian athletes: Nikita Lobintsev, Mikhail Dovgalyuk, Nataliya Lovtsova, Daria Ustinova and Anastasia Krapivina;
- Kornelia Ender, a German swimmer, who admitted to having received injections.
What about the Belgian swimmers at the Olympic Games?
The only Belgian to reach the top of the podium was Frederik Deburghgraeve. He won a gold medal and is our country's only Olympic champion. He distinguished himself in the 100m breaststroke at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
For the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, 3 names have already emerged: Valentine Dumont, Roos Vanotterdijk and Lucas Henveaux. Will they be part of the final podium?
