3 crazy scenarios!
Following the results of the 8th matchday of the Pro League, Union Saint-Gilloise have never been closer to winning their first title since their return to the top flight and may well be celebrating their victory as early as this weekend if the stars align. We’re heading into the 9th matchday, during which the winner may be decided!
Scenario 1: Union win!
With two matchdays to go, Union are one point ahead of Club Brugge. If the Brussels team come out of this matchday with a lead of 3 points or more, they will be crowned the winners.
This Saturday, Union will be playing in Antwerp, while Club Brugge will face off in one final Topper match in Brussels on Sunday afternoon.
If Union win on Saturday, Club Brugge will have to secure a win at Lotto Park, worth 3 points, to stay in the running. Bruges have won 5 Toppers in a row and will have no choice but to secure a sixth win. Union, for their part, wiped the floor with Antwerp 5-1 during the Playoffs. If the team clinches another victory, ironically Sporting Anderlecht could be decisive in granting their rival the title.
Scenario 2: Neck and neck
This second scenario would see the championship culminate in one final outstanding matchday.
In the event that both teams win or Union lose and Club Brugge fail to earn the 3 points, Brussels and Bruges would be neck and neck in the league and would have to battle it out during an explosive 10th matchday.
Scenario 3: Club Brugge pull out in front!
What if Union were to fall at the last hurdle once again? For two years running, Club Brugge have pipped Union to the post in the final minutes of play. Do things always come in threes?
If Union lose against Antwerp and the Bruges team win another Topper, Blauw-Zwart would move into the lead and their fate would be entirely in their own hands for the last matchday, once again depriving Union of the coveted title.
One thing’s for sure: you won’t have time to blink this weekend, as anything could happen!
