Super Bowl LX: an epic battle in Santa Clara between the Seahawks and the Patriots!
At one end, the Seattle Seahawks, dominant all season long. At the other, the New England Patriots, who have made a remarkable comeback in the Drake Maye era. Who will succeed the Kansas City Chiefs and hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy?
Seattle Seahawks: the heavy favorites
After a near-perfect regular season (14-3), the Seahawks arrive in California as the heavy favorites. Under coach Mike Macdonald’s steady guidance, Seattle has built a veritable defensive fortress.
Averaging just 17.2 points against per game, they’ve got the number 1 defense in the NFL. Leonard Williams, Devon Witherspoon and Julian Love have smothered every offense they’ve faced this season, including the 49ers in the divisional round (41-6).
Who would have thought it? Quarterback Sam Darnold seems to have discovered the fountain of youth. With 346 passing yards and 3 touchdowns in the conference final versus the Rams, he’s the driving force of a balanced offense – and has a perfect partner in the talented Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
New England Patriots: the fearless outsiders
They’ve been the sensation of this year’s playoffs. The Patriots, who weren’t expected to reach this level this early in their rebuild, have proven everyone’s predictions wrong.
Young prodigy Drake Maye has completely transformed this team. His ability to improvise and his cool head in key moments (like in their 10-7 conference final win over Denver in the Colorado cold) make him the biggest threat to Seattle.
And while their offense may be known to stumble, the Pats’ defense is truly formidable. They forced 5 turnovers against Houston and showed their ability to win games “the old-fashioned way” by toughing it out and getting down in the mud.
What to expect
Obviously, these two teams are among the NFL’s defensive elite, so we could be in for a Super Bowl where defense is king. In that type of contest, experience is often the deciding factor. The youth of Drake Maye, who will be playing in his first Super Bowl, and the Pats’ frequent offensive breakdowns could leave New England unable to break through the Seahawks’ defense. So bettors, take note: There’s a strong chance Seattle will take home the trophy, unless New England can pull off a legendary upset.
